For thousands of years, cultures around the world have harnessed the medicinal properties of ginger to boost health. You might know that ginger has potent anti-inflammatory properties. But did you know that it’s powerful enough to work as a natural alternative to traditional pain relief medications? 

There’s been a ton of research into the effects of ginger on pain. This includes a 2010 study that found this superfood minimized muscle pain related to injury from exercise. Additionally, researchers in a 2001 study found that consuming ginger daily helped patients with osteoarthritis reduce their knee pain. 

Reduces Nausea

Have you ever been told to brew a cup of ginger tea when feeling nauseous? It’s not just some old wives’ tale – it’s scientifically proven! Ginger root works to minimize nausea because it has active compounds (including gingerols, shogaols, and diterpenoids) that are believed to have antiemetic properties. A 2009 study, for example, shows that when taken daily, this root can reduce morning sickness in pregnant women. One of the lesser known benefits of ginger root is that it may help reduce stress levels and minimize anxiety. Ginger may boost levels of serotonin – also known as one of the happy hormones. The research is still a bit limited on the subject, but a 2010 animal study shows ginger positively impacts stress and anxiety levels.

Many of the active compounds found in ginger have antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. This means the root can fight against viruses and bacteria that may lead to infection.

This was found to be true in a 2008 study, where researchers found ginger could fight against oral bacteria that causes periodontitis and gingivitis. Researchers in a 2013 study also found that fresh ginger may fight against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This type of virus causes respiratory infections. 

May Help Prevent and Manage Diseases

There are a variety of diseases that ginger may help manage, or even prevent from occurring in the first place. Some early studies have shown that ginger may be effective against different cancers, including pancreatic, liver, breast, and ovarian cancers. 

It’s also believed that this superfood may play a role in boosting brain function and even fighting against Alzheimer’s. Additionally, ginger root might lower blood sugar levels, and may help reduce your risk of heart disease.
