If you’re planning on spending a lot of time at the pool or beach this summer, you need to give your skin some extra protection! Here’s how to keep your skin safe in the summer.
The weather is getting warmer, and many of us are getting ready to spend more time outside soaking up the sun! Of course, as we’re spending more time in the sun, we need to be extra mindful of making sure our skin is being taken care of. Let’s talk about some of the ways you can ensure your skin is staying safe this summer!
Keep Your Skin Safe and Healthy this Summer
Find a Sunscreen That You’ll Actually Apply Everyday
The best sunscreen for you is one that you’ll actually want to wear year-round and on a daily basis (yes – even on days when you’re not soaking up the sun at the beach!). If you don’t have a sunscreen that you absolutely love, it’s time to start testing out some products!
Two great brands to check out are Neutrogena and EltaMD. These companies both have a wide variety of sunscreens that are formulated for different skin types, so you’ll find one that works perfectly for you.
Are you planning a lot of time in the water this summer? Make sure you also have a good water-resistant sunscreen on hand, as well!
Another important tip: make sure you’re applying your sunscreen to those easy-to-forget spots, as well! The lips, ears, back of the neck, and hands are just a few of the spots that are commonly forgotten.
Don’t Forget to Reapply!
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to keep your skin safe in the summer is not reapplying your sunscreen. It’s important to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outside. If you’re swimming or working up a sweat, you’ll need to reapply more often.
Wearing makeup? You might be tempted to skip the reapplying, but there are ways to keep your skin protected throughout the day without messing with your look.
One easy way to reapply sunscreen over makeup is by using a sunscreen powder. This is especially great for people with oily skin – keep shine at bay while protecting your skin! Curious about using a sunscreen powder? Tarte and Supergoop both have great options!
Another option that will work for all skin types is reapplying your sunscreen over your makeup using a dry makeup sponge. Simply dispense some sunscreen onto the dry sponge, and very gently tap over the skin. You may need to do a little bit of makeup touch-ups after, but you’ll have well protected skin!
In addition to using sunscreen powder or reapplying with a makeup sponge, you can try a setting spray with SPF in it and spray your face throughout the day. The Kate Somerville Uncomplikated Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray – which has an SPF of 50 – is the perfect spray to keep your makeup intact while protecting your skin.
Stay Out of the Sun Between 10am to 2pm
If you’re trying to keep your skin safe in the summer, try your best to avoid being out in the sun between the hours of 10am to 2pm. This is when the sun is at its strongest, and the UV rays are most damaging.
That said, we get it – it’s unrealistic to never go outside during this timeframe! If you need to be out in the sun, try to keep your skin as protected as possible with physical sun blockers (in addition to wearing and reapplying your sunscreen!). This is the perfect time to find a cute wide-brimmed hat that you love, and invest in a good umbrella to take to the beach or lake.
Wash Off Your Sunscreen & Makeup with an Oil-Based Cleanser
If you’re packing on the sunscreen (which you should be!), you’ll want to make sure you’re thoroughly cleansing it away at the end of the day. Going to bed with sunscreen on your face can lead to clogged pores, and will also prevent any skin care products you’re putting on from fully working their magic.
The best way to ensure you’re removing every trace of sunscreen (and makeup and other debris) from your face is by double cleansing. Double cleansing involves cleansing with an oil-based cleanser, and then following up with your typical daily cleanser.
Need an oil-based cleanser for double cleansing? The Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil and the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Melting Balm are two amazing options.
Take Care of Your Skin from the Inside Out
We’ve talked a lot about what to put on your skin, but it’s just as important to consider how the food and drinks you consume affect your skin. Adding ingredients to your diet that boost your skin’s health is super critical for supporting your skin from the inside out!
One of our favorite ways to boost our skin’s radiance all year round is by mixing our Super Amazing Creamer in coffee, teas, and baked goods. This delicious sugar-free creamer contains collagen, a protein naturally found in our bodies that is responsible for keeping our skin firm and plump. It also contains hyaluronic acid, which boosts the skin’s hydration, as well as MCT oil, which is packed with healthy fats!
