Living a healthy lifestyle is AMAZING, but it’s not necessarily easy. Especially if you are trying to break free some those not- so-healthy habits. It takes constant energy, mindfulness and dedication to maintain healthy habits. Personally, I think that is why it can be SO challenging when we are trying to make these positive changes for ourselves. It’s bigger than just going to the gym or eating a salad for lunch. It’s changing the way we live on a daily basis, and that takes a lot of mental commitment. Priming our actions for success with a healthy level of mental and emotional awareness is a great place to start. Here are 5 steps for how to have a a healthy mentality!
5 Steps for a Healthy Mentality
Step 1: Accept Your Starting Point
Remember, you ARE beautiful and amazing already! That is why it is wonderful you are spending this time to nourish your already amazing self. You deserve it!
Just like anything, living a healthy lifestyle takes practice. When you are ready to make some healthy changes in your life, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on your current lifestyle. Try asking yourself the following questions:
- What are some healthy habits you already have and can expand on?
- What are some things you definitely want to change?
- How do you feel right now, and how do you want to feel?
Once you have thought about this, spend some time appreciating the phase of change you are in now. Accepting your current state doesn’t mean that you need to acknowledge anything about yourself is as “bad,” but rather, accepting the truth of where you are starting from will help you create realistic goals for yourself and your journey to optimal health.
Step 2: Start with Small Goals to Support Your Healthy Mentality
If you are anything like me, it’s easy to get to dive 100% into a new health goal and end up feeling overwhelmed! I have had the most personal success at creating lasting change by setting small goals and working my way up to a more robust routine. The reason this helps is that big goals, like sticking to a strict long-term diet or working out EVERY day, are often semi-unattainable. We spend all this energy making these changes, but then we have one day where we are off our game, and the whole thing goes copout. We are left feeling like we failed, and we neglect to appreciate all the forward progress we have actually made.
Support your own morale by taking baby steps first. It still feels great to complete these baby goals! If you don’t work out at all, set a small attainable goal for your first week. Something like “I am going to exercise for 20 min for 3 times this week”. This is a way less daunting commitment, and who knows, you might even be motivated to do more if you are successful!
Step 3: Find Joy in the Healthy Journey
It’s important to find healthy habits that you also happen to enjoy! Eating healthy and working out are great for your body, but they should be good for your mind too. When looking into healthy food options, there is a whole new world of culinary delight. Learn about your favorite veggies and get creative making new dishes with them. I am totally obsessed with cauliflower tacos for example!
In regard to exercising, find that think that makes you excited to work out. I LOVE hiking with my dog and taking hot yoga classes. Find your bliss and you will end up wanting to go back for more.
Step 4: Celebrate Healthy Success
When trying to make healthy lifestyle changes, it is much easier you punish ourselves for our shortcomings rather that celebrate our progress. Make sure to pay special attention to celebrating the goals you meet, no matter how small.
If you make it through a whole day without eating that one thing you know you shouldn’t, celebrate that with something special! It’s much more beneficial to celebrate our success than it is to focus on what we didn’t do right. So try to stay ultra-focused on being positive.
Step 5: Get Excited About the Healthier You
Staying positive about your progress is of the utmost importance. The best way you can do this is to visualize yourself having already accomplished what you want. Feel the excitement you have about your future healthy self! You deserve to feel good about what you are doing and where you are going. These good vibes this will help you stay focused on the positive outcome and make a reality!
