Do you suspect you might be dealing with brain fog? Let’s talk about some of the most common signs and causes of brain fog, and how you can beat it for good!
The Signs and Causes of Brain Fog (and How You Can Beat It!)
Brain fog isn’t a medical condition, but rather a term used to describe general mental fatigue. The causes of brain fog are vast, ranging from poor sleep to an unbalanced diet to underlying health issues – which is why it’s super important to talk to a doctor if you’re having issues with mental fatigue.
Anyone who has experienced brain fog knows just how frustrating it is. That lack of mental clarity can negatively impact your work, and often seeps into your life at home. Think you might be dealing with brain fog? Here are some common tell-tale signs.
3 Signs You’re Dealing with Mental Fatigue
#1 You can’t seem to concentrate on the task at hand
If you find that your mind continues to wander and you just can’t hone in on your work, you may be experiencing brain fog.
#2 You keep forgetting things
One of the main signs of brain fog is forgetfulness. You might find you often leave the house without your keys or your phone, or have a hard time remembering certain things (like what you had for dinner last night).
#3 You’re dealing with constant fatigue and mental dullness
Mental fatigue can be characterized by simply feeling…off. If you’re dealing with lack of motivation, or just feel like you’re missing that mental sharpness you normally have, you could be dealing with brain fog.
How to Beat Brain Fog
While there are quite a few factors that can lead to brain fog (we’ll talk a bit more about that below), thankfully, there are a few lifestyle changes that may help you get back that much needed mental clarity!
Prioritize Sleep
One of the biggest causes of mental fatigue is a lack of sleep. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, you’ll end up feeling groggy and unmotivated – and your stress levels will go through the roof, as well!
If your sleep habits are less than stellar, it’s time for a sleep hygiene revamp! At the end of the night, commit to your favorite self-care ritual to wind down and ensure you’ll get the best sleep possible – and do what you can to make sure you’re getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night!
Manage Your Stress Levels
Okay, it’s a lot easier said than done. But lowering your stress levels can have a huge impact on your mental clarity. Stress is a major culprit of brain fog, because it releases cortisol (AKA the hormone responsible for the “fight or flight” response). Chronic stress inevitably leads to mental fatigue.
Are you dealing with high stress levels on a regular basis? Then start to look at healthy habits you can incorporate into your routine to help keep them in check. Working out, meditation, journaling, or trying out a new hobby are all good places to start!
Look at Your Diet
Another one of the common causes of brain fog? An unbalanced diet. Potato chips, donuts, candy…they aren’t going to cut it! A poor diet can lead to a bad mood, physical fatigue, and a lack of mental clarity.
You need to make sure you’re incorporating brain-healthy foods that’ll help eliminate mental fatigue. Some ingredients that’ll boost your brain power include blueberries, broccoli, kale, turmeric, green tea, coffee, fatty fish, avocados, and nuts and seeds.

Talk to a Doctor
Lifestyle changes may help you regain mental clarity. However, brain fog can be related to a wide variety of factors and circumstances, including hormonal fluctuations (like during pregnancy or menopause), medications, mental health issues, and certain illnesses.
With this in mind, it’s incredibly important to keep up with your regular doctor’s appointments, and talk to a healthcare professional about your mental fatigue. You can work together to get to the root cause, and establish a health plan to stop brain fog for good!
